On 16 April 2019, David Lama, Hansjörg Auer, and Jess Roskelley were caught in an avalanche while descending from a newly climbed route on Howse Peak in the Canadian Rockies. All three mountaineers lost their lives. Their bodies were recovered on 21 April 2019 after weather and avalanche conditions delayed the recovery operation. The accident remains one of the most significant tragedies in modern alpinism.
